Giedre Brandao, AbBaltis
Biotech company AbBaltis provides clinical plasma specimens to manufacturing companies that make diagnostic kits – the tools that are ultimately used by hospital labs to perform blood tests. The award winning business, founded in 2010, has grown significantly over the past few years, and is about to expand even further.
Manufacturers that make diagnostic blood tests need a steady supply of good quality, predictable blood-based specimens in order to develop new kits, reagents and analytical equipment that can then be used by hospital laboratories to investigate real patient samples. Kent-based company AbBaltis sources, processes and delivers a wide range of these blood derivatives to companies all over the world, as Giedre Brandao, Managing Director, explained: “We provide a portfolio of products that help our customers to develop new diagnostic kits for example, for autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and allergies. We pride ourselves on the value-added service we deliver, processing and testing our samples to gather all the relevant data that scientists need might need for their research.”
“I am delighted to be able to say that we have been profitable since year one. I started the company in 2010 with no private investment or bank loans, and we have now grown to a turnover of £800,000 in 2018. We have also won quite a few business awards locally in the Kent area, and are especially proud of our Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade. Part of our success is due to our global diversification; we have many international clients, and ship to the US, Taiwan, China, Japan, South Korea, the EU and even Argentina!”
“Initially, our biggest challenge was finding local people with the experience and skills we needed, but we have since developed strong networks with local universities and colleges in the area, and we have frequently recruited newly qualified scientists into trainee roles, which has worked very well. We’re now about to move into a bigger premises – still within Kent Science Park which served us so well when we were a start-up company – and look forward to continuing the growth of our business,” Giedre concuded.
